About HanHanCraft

Architecture you can wear

HanHanCraft is a small design studio in Pickering, in the Greater Toronto Area, making solid wood and brass jewelry stands and handmade fine jewelry. Everything starts on our own bench: we design, cast, finish and set stones in-house.

How it started

Han Ma holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Toronto and worked at Kengo Kuma & Associates, the Japanese architecture firm known for its warm, crafted use of wood and natural materials. In 2018 she went looking for a way to store her own jewelry and couldn't find anything that was both functional and beautiful, so she designed it herself: a slim stand of solid wood and brass bars, as carefully proportioned as a building.

Those stands became HanHanCraft's first collection. Today they are in homes and boutiques in more than 20 countries, chosen by over 1,000 customers, and they were featured on HGTV's Home Town Makeover.

From stands to fine jewelry

Designing stands meant spending a lot of time with jewelry, and Han soon realized that designing a ring is a lot like designing architecture: structure, proportion and light, but at a scale where she has complete control and far more creative freedom. That led to HanHanCraft's fine jewelry line, which is still young and growing.

Our signature is Mitsuro Hikime, a centuries-old Japanese technique in which warm beeswax is pulled and folded by hand into flowing, striated forms, then cast in metal. We make our own wax, and we have tested hundreds of recipes to find the right wax for each design, because the wax decides how a piece moves. Every ring is cast in 925 sterling silver and no two are alike. Read more about Mitsuro Hikime.

Who we are

  • Han Ma, designer. Every stand and every piece of jewelry starts as one of Han's drawings.
  • Juan Wang, bench jeweler. Juan casts, finishes and sets stones for every jewelry piece in our studio, so a design never leaves our hands between sketch and box.

What we care about

  • Materials that last. Solid wood and brass, sterling silver, and real gemstones.
  • Responsibly sourced wood. Our wood is FSC-certified, and pine, maple and walnut are sourced locally.
  • Made by us. Design, casting, finishing and stone setting all happen in our studio.
  • Made for you. We take custom orders for stands and jewelry: size, shape, wood, bar material and engraving.
